Bill More Jobs.

Manual solar inspection takes days. A thermal drone does the same job in hours — at 99% accuracy, 75% faster, and with defects a ground crew would never catch. The Matrice 4T and 4E are the standard platforms for solar inspection operators in 2026.

Why Thermal

Solar Panels Fail Invisibly.
Thermal Finds Them.

A solar panel can look perfectly fine and still be underperforming. Cracked cells, bypass diode failures, delamination, wiring issues — all of these create heat anomalies that thermal cameras detect instantly. The naked eye misses them entirely.

Hotspot Detection

Faulty cells generate excess heat — exactly what thermal imaging detects. Drones fly at optimal angle and altitude to capture temperature variance across every panel in the array. Issues visible within minutes of the flight beginning.

Bypass Diode Failures

Bypass diode failures reduce string output by 33% or more and are nearly invisible on a visual inspection. Thermal signature is distinctive and reliable — exactly what radiometric imaging on the Matrice 4T is built to detect.

Delamination & Cell Cracks

Physical damage to panels shows up as thermal anomalies long before visible damage appears. Proactive detection at installation or annual inspection catches warranty-eligible defects before they compound into lost production.

String & Inverter Issues

Inverter faults and offline strings often affect blocks of panels that appear visually normal. Thermal imaging from altitude shows the entire array's performance pattern, making string-level issues obvious in a single pass.

The ROI

The Math Makes This
an Obvious Decision

A 20 MW solar farm requires roughly 500 hours of manual inspection. A drone covers the same site in 2–4 hours. The inspection pays for itself in a single contract.

For inspection businesses taking on client work, drone solar inspection is a recurring revenue model. Solar assets require annual thermographic inspection under IEC standards. Same client, same site, same contract, every year.

For asset owners and O&M teams bringing this capability in-house, the ROI is even faster. One operator saved over $476,000 annually by catching defective modules that manual inspection would have missed.

Where This Gets Used

Utility-Scale Solar Farms

100+ MW facilities that would take months to inspect manually. The 4E's automated mapping and the 4T's thermal sensor work together across large sites in planned flight routes using DJI Pilot 2.

Commercial Rooftop Arrays

Warehouses, distribution centers, and commercial buildings with rooftop solar. Fast deployment and compact footprint make the 4T ideal for portfolio inspection work across multiple commercial sites per day.

EPC Commissioning Inspection

Day-zero inspection creates a thermal baseline before the system goes live. Identifies installation defects while warranty coverage still applies — increasingly required by commercial buyers and financial institutions.

Annual O&M Inspection

IEC 62446-3 standards recommend annual thermographic inspection of PV systems. Recurring contract work for inspection operators — same clients, same sites, every year.

Post-Storm Damage Assessment

After hail, high wind, or major weather events, asset owners need fast visibility. Drone thermal inspection in hours versus manual assessment over days or weeks — critical for insurance claims and warranty disputes.

Residential Portfolio Inspection

Solar installers and O&M providers servicing residential rooftop systems at scale. The 4T's portability means fast site-to-site deployment — 8–10 residential inspections per day is achievable.

Choose Your Platform

Two Platforms.
One Mission.

The 4T leads with thermal — ideal for fault detection and inspections where you need to see heat anomalies at the panel level. The 4E leads with mapping — ideal when you need photogrammetry, accurate site models, and high-resolution RGB output alongside thermal. Both are the right tool depending on what your clients need.

Who This Is For

Four Types of Buyers.
One Solution.

Drone Inspection Operators

Pilots building a commercial inspection business around solar. Recurring annual contract model with a clear ROI pitch to solar farm operators and asset managers.

Solar EPC Contractors

Installers adding in-house inspection for commissioning, warranty documentation, and O&M contracts. The 4E handles site modeling; the 4T handles fault detection.

Insurance Adjusters

Post-storm and hail damage assessment across large solar assets. Thermal and RGB documentation for claims support — coverage that's faster, safer, and more defensible than manual ground inspection.

Utilities & Asset Managers

Utility-scale and portfolio owners bringing inspection in-house. Large sites make the ROI immediate — the equipment pays back in one inspection cycle with ongoing annual savings.

From Inspection Operators

What Operators Are Saying

"The 4T covered a 5 MW commercial site in just over an hour. We found 43 panels with bypass diode issues the O&M team had no idea about. That's the whole value proposition right there."

Common Questions

What Solar Inspection
Buyers Usually Ask

Does the Matrice 4T capture radiometric thermal data?

Yes. The 4T's thermal sensor is radiometric, meaning it captures actual temperature data per pixel — not just a relative heat image. This is essential for IEC-compliant inspection reports and hotspot quantification.

How much area can I cover per flight?

At standard solar inspection altitude and speed, the 4T inspects approximately 1 MW per 10 minutes. On a 45-minute battery, that's 4–5 MW per charge. Multiple batteries and the 4E's extended range significantly increase daily coverage capacity.

What software works with these platforms?

DJI Pilot 2 for mission planning and automated grid flight. Thermal imagery is compatible with DJI Thermal Analysis Tool plus third-party platforms including DroneDeploy, Raptor Maps, and Pix4D. File formats are industry standard.

Do I need Part 107 for commercial solar inspection?

Yes. Any paid commercial drone operation requires an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Solar inspection is commercial work by definition. The cert is straightforward — required before your first paying job.

Which platform — 4T or 4E — for solar inspection?

If thermal fault detection is the primary deliverable, the 4T. If site modeling, photogrammetry, or georeferenced mapping is part of what you're delivering, the 4E. Many operators carrying both platforms bill higher rates per job. Call us and we'll help you decide.

What's the activation status on these units?

These are unused, unflown units that have been activated prior to resale. Zero flight hours. Fully functional. They are not eligible for DJI Enterprise Care — we offer CPS drone protection as an alternative at checkout, covering crashes, hardware failure, and camera damage on commercial Part 107 operations.
