First Decision: M4T or M4TD?

Before anything else, make sure you're looking at the right airframe. Both share the same controller, sensors, and flight characteristics. The difference is the airframe and the weather rating. The M4T is folding-arm, portable, pilot-deployed. The M4TD is fixed-arm, IP55-rated for sustained rain and dust, and built for dock integration.

About These Units (Read Before You Buy)

We want this clear up front, not buried in the fine print. Every unit ships as unused DJI hardware with zero flight hours. We complete a universal, region-free activation before it ships, so it's verified and ready to bind to your DJI account on arrival. The activation does not affect your ability to register, operate, or transfer the aircraft.

Here's the one tradeoff. Because of that universal activation, this unit is not eligible for DJI Enterprise Care or DJI's U.S. manufacturer warranty. DJI's paid repair service is still available, and most of our public safety customers cover the aircraft with the CPS plan instead.

The Thermal Camera in the Field

Thermal is the primary sensor for tactical and SAR work, not supplemental. The 640x512 uncooled VOx sensor reads radiated heat, not visible light. A person lying motionless in tall grass or under canopy is invisible to a standard camera at night. To thermal, they're a bright heat source against cooler ground, regardless of visibility.

• UHR super-resolution: finer heat differentiation. Tell a person from an animal and read body position at altitude without a dangerous low hover.
• Temperature range: High Gain covers -20°C to 150°C for person search. Low Gain extends to 550°C for structure-fire and wildfire hotspot mapping, same aircraft.
• Nine palettes: switch in flight to maximize contrast against the background you're searching.
• f/1.0 aperture: one of the widest on any compact enterprise thermal drone. Sharper differentiation at altitude and better sensitivity on cold nights when a hypothermic subject runs low on heat.
• NIR auxiliary light (100m): supplemental lighting in visual modes without blinding the thermal sensor.

AL1 Spotlight in This Kit

Thermal finds the subject. The AL1 confirms them, coordinates the ground team, and guides them in total darkness. It mounts to the M4T and tracks with the gimbal, so wherever the camera points, the light follows. One pilot, one aircraft, full thermal and visual at once.

• 100m range: light a subject from a safe altitude without dropping below obstacle clearance
• Always-on: continuous ground-team guidance during extraction
• Strobe: signaling, position marking, and helicopter coordination during hoist or extraction
• Wide-FOV: broad area lighting during active sweeps
• Runs independently of thermal. Both at once, no mode switching, no landing.

AI Subject Detection and Smart Tracking

The onboard AI flags human, vehicle, and vessel heat signatures from altitude without the pilot scanning every frame. Fly a search grid while the AI flags thermal anomalies that match human-shaped patterns.

Once a subject is located, Smart Track locks the gimbal and holds through movement, wind drift, and altitude change. The laser rangefinder drops a GPS coordinate on the locked target. Observation Range Recording shows the exact ground already covered on the controller map, so there are no gaps, no re-covered ground, no missed corridors at 2 AM.

Note: AI detection identifies human-shaped heat signatures generally, not specific individuals. Visual confirmation through the zoom camera is the pilot's final step.

Four Batteries for Sustained Operations

Most missing-person searches run longer than 49 minutes, and most structure fires need persistent overwatch. Four batteries plus the charging station keep you airborne. Hot-swap at RTH, relaunch in under two minutes, hold continuous coverage for the duration of the incident. Total flight time with rotation: up to 3.2 hours per deployment.

Federal funding note: As of December 22, 2025, FAR 52.240-1 restricts federal funds, including federal grant pass-through dollars, for procurement of DJI products. This kit may still be procured with state-only funds, county and municipal operating budgets, asset forfeiture where state law permits, private grants, and foundation funding. Protection and Coverage

If your drone arrives with a defect, contact us within 72 hours of delivery and we'll coordinate a replacement or repair at no cost under our DOA policy.

CPS Accidental Drone Protection (at checkout) is the right plan for this kit. It explicitly covers commercial and public safety Part 107 operations, including active SAR, law enforcement, and fire response. Coverage spans crash and impact, water and liquid damage, internal hardware failure, controller, and camera and gimbal across the five-sensor package. If the aircraft can't be repaired, CPS replaces it. A deductible applies at claim.
