The DJI Matrice 4 series drones are exceptional machines designed for professional aerial photography, surveying, and various industrial applications. However, like any technology, they can encounter some common issues that may hinder your flying experience. In this blog post, we will explore troubleshooting steps for some prevalent problems with the DJI Matrice 4 and the DJI Matrice 4E. By following these tips, you can ensure a smoother operation and maintain the performance of your drone.
Understanding the DJI Matrice 4 Series
The DJI Matrice 4 series includes powerful drones known for their stability, advanced flight capabilities, and versatility. Models like the DJI Matrice 4 and DJI Matrice 4E offer superior imaging options, including compatibility with the DJI AL1 Spotlight, making them ideal for various professional applications. However, like any technology, occasional glitches can arise. Understanding what to look for and how to troubleshoot these issues can save you time and frustration during your flights.
Common Issues with the DJI Matrice 4 Series
Battery Problems
The battery is the lifeblood of any drone, including the DJI Matrice 4. If you're experiencing issues with flight time or the drone not powering on, follow these troubleshooting steps:
Check Battery Charge: Ensure that the battery is adequately charged. A low battery can lead to unexpected shutdowns during flight.
Battery Connections: Inspect the battery terminals and ensure that they are clean and free from debris. Poor connections can lead to power issues.
Battery Health: Monitor the battery's health status in the DJI GO application. If the battery shows signs of degradation, consider replacing it.
Communication Failures
Communication between the drone and the remote controller is crucial for safe flying. If you experience connection drops or have difficulties in controlling the drone, consider the following:
Signal Interference: Look for potential sources of interference in your flying area. Objects like buildings, trees, and hills can obfuscate the signal.
Firmware Updates: Ensure that both your DJI Matrice 4 and remote controller have the latest firmware updates. Outdated software can lead to connectivity issues.
Re-calibrate Remote: If the communications continue to falter, try re-calibrating your remote control according to the user manual's instructions.
Camera Issues
The camera on your DJI Matrice 4 is one of its standout features, allowing for stunning photography and videography. If you face issues with the camera, such as blurry images or failure to focus, try these solutions:
Lens Cleanliness: Ensure the lens is clean from dirt, smudges, or scratches that could affect image quality.
Settings Review: Double-check your camera settings in the DJI GO app. Misconfigured settings can lead to unwanted results.
Reboot the Camera: Occasionally, simply restarting the camera by rebooting the drone can resolve many minor glitches.
Advanced Troubleshooting Steps
Firmware Problems
Firmware issues can arise and may affect everything from the drone’s flight stability to its overall performance. Here’s how to address these:
Update Firmware: Regularly check DJI’s website or the DJI GO app for firmware updates. Keeping your drone up to date prevents many issues.
Reset Settings: If you continue experiencing glitches following an update, consider resetting your drone's settings to factory defaults.
GPS Signal Issues
Having a weak GPS signal can affect your drone's ability to maintain stability. Here’s how to troubleshoot GPS-related problems:
Clear Flight Area: Ensure you are flying in an area with an unobstructed view of the sky. Dense tree cover or tall buildings can disrupt GPS signal strength.
Check GPS Settings: Verify that your drone settings allow for GPS locking. Some modes may disable GPS function for specific operations.
Warm-Up Time: Allow the drone some warm-up time if it seems slow to acquire a signal when powering on.
Maintenance Tips for Optimal Performance
Prevention is always better than cure. Regular maintenance can significantly reduce the frequency of issues you encounter with your DJI Matrice 4 or DJI Matrice 4E. Here are a few tips for maintaining your drone:
Regular Inspections: Routinely check the drone for any signs of wear and tear, particularly on the propellers and motors.
Firmware Updates: Regularly update your firmware to ensure you’re benefiting from the latest features and bug fixes.
Storage Conditions: Store your drone in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and moisture to prolong its lifespan.
Flying Troubles and Safety Protocols
Flight Control Issues
Flight control problems can arise from various factors. If you notice your drone acting erratically during a flight, consider these troubleshooting measures:
Control Stick Sensitivity: Check and adjust the sensitivity settings from the DJI GO app to ensure you have responsive controls.
Wind Conditions: Avoid flying in poor weather conditions, particularly high winds, which can lead to unstable flights.
Safety Protocols to Keep in Mind
Before flying your DJI Matrice 4 or DJI Matrice 4E, always adhere to these safety protocols:
Pre-Flight Checklist: Create and follow a pre-flight checklist to ensure everything is functioning properly before takeoff.
Know Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with local drone laws and regulations to ensure you fly responsibly.
Emergency Protocols: Have a plan in place for emergency situations, including loss of signal or battery failure.
When to Seek Professional Help
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, issues may persist. In such cases, it may be best to consult with professionals who specialize in drone repairs or expert maintenance services. Here are signs that it’s time to seek help:
Persistent Performance Issues: If your drone continues experiencing issues despite all attempted troubleshooting, it may need professional diagnostic.
Crashed Drone: If you’ve had an accident with your drone, it's wise to have it inspected by a technician, even for minor crashes.
Elevate Your Drone Experience
Even the most well-built drones can encounter issues from time to time. Having the right troubleshooting knowledge can empower you to handle problems efficiently and keep your DJI Matrice 4 or DJI Matrice 4E flying smoothly. With regular maintenance, firmware updates, and adherence to safety protocols, you'll maximize your drone’s performance and enhance your overall flying experience.
By being proactive and informed, you can fully enjoy the capabilities of your drone, from capturing breathtaking aerial shots with the DJI AL1 Spotlight to executing precise industrial tasks. Remember, the sky is the limit—so keep those propellers spinning and your mind open to adventure!

Easy to work with, kind, efficient and attentive. The Golden Gate Auxiliary of Colorado, Inc. bought a drone for our Volunteer fire company and our Firefighters love it! Thanks, Cover Drones!
Bought this to add life to my DJI controller on long flight days. Find it does not add enough additional power to be worth the cost. Also, requires external charger which is suggested but not seen as required. Charging in the remote works but the WB37 gets used first to 0% and then the main battery is used.
Had trouble with the shipping carrier getting the drone to my house. Sabrina went out of her way to help resolve the shipping issue. Couldn’t be more satisfied with them.
